New Project

I don't usually make custom orders, but this one sounded fun. I was asked to make handtowels with my lemon lime embroidery and applique on them. (She had seen the design on one of my Stella Tote Bags.) So, I decided to try it. Here's the finished product...I think they turned out pretty well!

It's that time again

It's finally getting warm outside and that means it's time again for me to set up my booth at the Fremont Market in Seattle. I can't believe this is my 4th summer doing this! I love almost everything about it...I love seeing people's reactions to my bags, I love people's interest in what I make and I love just watching people. I don't love the wind, the rain or the blistering heat, but it's all part of the deal and the good days always make up for the bad ones.

Etsy.com makes it easy for me to reach worldwide and sell year round to an audience that understands and appreciates the time and effort it takes to make each item. It's a fantastic web site for getting your name out there, but there's nothing like putting a face to the person buying one of your bags.

If you're in the neighborhood, stop by! The Fremont Market is open year-round from 10-5 every Sunday. I'll be there until the end of July and then it's time to get ready for Bumbershoot!

Snow Day?!?

I guess I can't say they didn't warn us. They did say it was going to snow. I didn't really believe them...it didn't seem cold enough and maybe the foothills would see flurries, but not here in Seattle. I may have been wrong. This was the scene in my backyard this afternoon. I didn't get home in time to get a picture of the snow falling so this was shortly after it stopped. Granted, it's no blizzard, but for those of us in the Northwest, this doesn't happen very often in Dec...and it never happens in March.

So, I did what any self respecting girl does on a snow day...I got my hair cut. Here are the before/after shots.
I'm really happy with how it turned out. It's hard to tell from the photo but it's very choppy and messy in the back (ie low maintanence) and I get to keep my length in the front (it's tucked behind my ears in the pic). Think Victoria Beckham-ish. I think it'll be fun for spring.

Whenever that gets here.

Happy Easter!

When I was little I always thought that Easter morning was the best part of the whole day. Waking up early to secretly scout out Easter basket hiding places, giggling with satisfaction as I ate my first of many chocolate bunnies and watched my brothers still hunting, then the mad rush of everyone in their new Easter outfits and shiny shoes trying to get to church on time. After church it was off to grandma and grandpa's for brunch. My favorite part of the meal was dessert. Grandma always made a little lamb-shaped coconut covered cake with a pink bow for dessert.

Easter mornings have changed alot since then...no more baskets, new outfits or lamb-shaped coconut cakes. But they're still just as good. Today I slept in and woke to a soft drizzly gray day. I made cinnamon french toast with fresh strawberries. I'm sure not everyone is excited about the rain as it takes the fun out of all the easter egg hunts and ruins all the fluffy colored dresses, but for this little chick with nowhere to go, it made everything better. I think this afternoon I'll watch a movie and curl up with a tea.

I hope your Easter morning was just the way you love it!

Extreme Logo Makeover

Another lovely warm spring day here, making it so hard to stay indoors. I did manage to get outside to spray paint a few new bags, but I had a huge to-do list waiting inside. I got a few things crossed off...including updating my logo. It's something I've been needing to do for awhile but first I had to figure out what direction I wanted to go with my business...serious and professional? or fun and quirky?

This is what my logo used to be: Not exciting. It doesn't represent the idea of one of a kind at all.
After several hours and numerous ideas I finally {I think} decided on this:

It started with the idea of making green city population sign. That was the inspiration for the whole idea behind PopulationOne to begin with. My favorite color is lime green so instead of the traditional kelly green used on the signs, I went brighter. And pink and green is one of my favorite combos. The one pink tree represents the idea of being different and standing out in a crowd. I'll probably tweak it over the next few days, but there it is...the new me! What do you think?

A few other new things I had to show off: I found these adorable peep toe shoes at Nordstrom. I love the teal color...they'll go with so many things!

The 2nd Day of Spring

Ask anyone and they'll tell you I'm the girl who loves a good rainy day to curl up on the couch with a cocoa. But after a few months of gloomy winter days, I'm ready for a warm sunshiny day. And today was full of sunny loveliness! Even better, I had the day off to enjoy it...

It was a nice, relaxing day that started with meeting friends for lunch and coffee, then a trip to Michael's Crafts and finally just driving around in my car enjoying the sun.

The nice weather is getting me out of my winter coccoon and I'm planning a few things for spring. So far I've decided I'd like to take a yoga class, sign up for a screenprinting class at The Vera Project and start blogging (1 down, 2 to go!).

I still have so much work to do in PopulationOne land...it's a little overwhelming. My goal for this week is to get a planner and start writing everything down. I still need to apply for Bumbershoot, send out Katrina bags for consignment, finish my friend's "mommy bag", get ready for the Fremont Market (only 2 wks away!), send out biz cards and thank you's to be printed and what feels like a million other little things. It was lovely having today off to play, but tomorrow will be a busy day.

I hope spring has sprung in your little corner of the world!
